Veterans Invited to Mitchell Elementary School and American Legion Post 493

“The post is honored that George was selected and will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year”, Post 316 Adjutant Irma Martin said. “Serving as a master of ceremonies at Memorial Day and Veterans Day events and having the radio stations involved in the ceremonies are my ways of paying tribute to America’s heroes”. Customers who come in for service on Veterans Day get a free haircut card to give to a veteran. The rest of the parade will peel off to the right on River Street. So far, more than 35 floats and entries comprise the parade, with many more expected to join in the coming days, he said.

Dedication of the “Rosie the Riveter Memorial Bridge” sign, 2 p.m.at Horace Mann Middle School. Nineteen new trees will be dedicated in Veterans Grove to honor veterans who participated in school’s Patriotic Education trips with C of O students to Vietnam in 2014 and the Mariana Islands and Japan in 2015. “The service will last about an hour”. A free USO Show and dance begins at 8 p.m. Donations will be accepted.
The city’s traditional Veterans Day Ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bill Barber Park, 4 Civic Center Plaza. The flame is lit and guarded through the night at the park, . “It starts at 11, and there’s a 21-gun salute and they play taps”.
On Tuesday, November 10, 9:30 a.m., Queensborough Community College will host a Remembrance and Reflection Ceremony at the Charles F. Bova Veterans Memorial Grove, located inside the main Bayside campus gate on 56 Avenue. The event will feature guest speaker Capt. Scott T. Farr, USN, Commander, Electronic Attack Wing; performances by the Oak Harbor High School Treble Choir and All-Island Community Band; and the Oak Harbor High School NJROTC Color Guard. Awards and full band retreat at 9:30 p.m. Event admission is charged at the door. Pre-reservations are $15/person and includes pork spare ribs, barbeque chicken, barbeque beans, potato salad, cole slaw, rolls and beverages.

In 1938, Armistice Day was voted a national holiday, and then in 1971 became Veterans Day, honoring veterans of all wars, under President Nixon. The Governor’s Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee’s Outstanding Veterans will be honored, along with other special presentations. For more information. call 732-921-8872.
