Work has begun to erect a 650-tonne roof truss over Anfield’s new main stand as the revelopment prepares to reach a major milestone.

The structure was hoisted on to two towers, either side of the existing stand yesterday, by cranes but high winds led to the work being postponed.

It was instead delayed until this morning to ensure that it went ahead in safe conditions.

The lift operation is scheduled to take the full day to complete and follows months of detailed planning by Carillion, the club’s construction partner.

In a statement released by the club, it was revealed that the lift was performed by two of the UK’s largest cranes: the AK680 and the AK912, by Sarens and ALE respectively.

Lifting the truss is a landmark moment in the ongoing expansion of the Reds’ home, which is due to be completed by the start of the 2016-17 season.

Ian Ayre, the club’s chief executive, said: “This is an historic milestone in Anfield’s history as the stadium transformation continues to take shape”.

Liverpool’s stadium expansion has moved to the roof at Anfield as work began Friday to raise a 650-ton truss over the new main stand. The Main Stand will feature a new third tier, adding 8,300 seats.

The redevelopment of Anfield Stadium was announced in December 2014 and the Main Stand expansion project remains on track for completion during the 2016/2017 Barclays Premier League Season.
