Of course, for many young viewers, late night will be how they learn about the conventions as studies repeatedly say the comic programs are often a primary news source.
Cranking up the drama of the GOP gathering, Texas Senator Ted Cruz was overshadowed by Trump himself and booed off the stage at the RNC on Wednesday after poignantly offering token congrats to the nominee and refusing to back him.
Jay Wallace, executive vice president for news and editorial at Fox News, said a chunk of those viewers stick around after they sample its prime-time hosts such as Bill O’Reilly or Sean Hannity, who can deliver commentary when it gets a little tiresome on the convention stage. Fox News Channel dominated, averaging 6.35 million viewers during the 10 p.m. hour when all of the networks competed, the Nielsen company said.
The night-to-night ratings boost for CNN and MSNBC wasn’t quite as extreme as Fox News’, but it still existed.

Fox News, on the other hand, averaged 4.8 million viewers during prime time on Tuesday, versus 5.8 million on the equivalent night four years ago.
TIMING IS EVERYTHING: Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was speaking to the convention when broadcast networks ABC, CBS and NBC began their one hour of coverage, and they treated his appearance nearly as an inconvenience. That reality contest drops another player at 9 p.m. Thursday (tonight). In the 9 PM time slot, Zoo averaged 4.1 million total viewers and a 0.7 demo rating on Tuesday, down nine percent and a tenth in the week-to-week.
NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” 8-10 p.m., 2.9 rating. NBC will not have that lead-in this evening.
CNN saw a far bigger Trump bump as its prime-time audience of 3.6 million viewers was up 200% from 2012.
Fox News Channel was also first among the cable networks for the night’s first hour of coverage, averaging 5.09 million viewers to 3.17 million for CNN.
2 show with “Big Brother”, which averaged a 1.7. Last night’s coverage drew 10.06 million total, 2.1 in the demo, with ABC slightly down and NBC slightly up.

Fox was second in ratings with a 0.7/3, but fourth in viewers with 1.8 million. Modern Family was the lead-in.
