The Governor said NY stands in solidarity with the LGBT community and mourns the loss of the Americans whose lives were cut short by this senseless act of violence.
At the time, the police raided gay bars when it was illegal to serve gay people alcohol or for gays to dance with each other, the Inn said.
John B., 70, said he has been coming to Stonewall since he moved to NY 35 years ago. Our forbearers were social outcasts who experienced everyday anti-LGBT oppression and whose revolutionary ideas pushed us into a new age of unapologetic visibility – never forget it!
” “[I am] open and comfortable about loving my fan base, gay or straight, because to me there is no difference, it is my fan base.
The mayor had come to deliver a message for Latino, Muslim, and LGBT New Yorkers: “We stand with you and we will protect you”.
“It just hurts me that a place like Pulse was targeted because people go there to feel safe”, he said. The Washington Post said his ex-wife told the newspaper his family is from Afghanistan and he was born in NY before the family later moved to Florida.
At least nine ME communities are holding vigils to honor victims in the attack on a nightclub in Florida.
The governor also took time in his speech to the crowd to voice his continued support for “sensible gun control” legislation. As Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio arrived at the vigil, the crowd burst into chants of “What do we want?”
“I remember how it felt on the day after 9/11, and I bet many of you do as well”.
“Of course I’m scared”, said Ann Alessi.
On Tuesday night, Public Advocate Letitia James is planning to host a unity vigil at the Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn.
Tonight, members of the NYU community are invited to a 5 p.m. vigil at 60 Washington Square South.

Organizers said the goal was to stand together against anti-gay, anti-transgender and anti-Muslim bias. But almost two hours into the vigil, many in the crowd had lost patience, and Bratton’s short speech was drowned out by calls such as “Stop killing people!”, “End police brutality!”, and “Demilitarize the NYPD!”. “It’s in this space where people come together when good things happen and bad things happen”, Martin said.
