Vijender Singh Lands Verbal Punches on Sonny Whiting

The transition from amateur to professional has not been easy, but boxer Vijender Singh can not wait for the beginning of a new life when he makes his pro debut on October 10 against Englishman Sonny Whiting. He has trained in United Kingdom for a month.

In his debut middleweight pro bout, the strapping six-footer faces a cocky opponent in Whiting, who has promised to put him “through hell”. The Indian will clearly start as the underdog. “Now it is focussing the last few hours into the mental preparation and getting my mind set on defeating Whiting”.

The Haryana-lad would be walking in to a couple of thumping Punjabi songs – “Singh is King” and “Singh is Bling” – and would look to make sure that the music keep playing at the end of the four round that he will fight tomorrow.

Vijender has been training for his professional debut for more than a month with experienced trainer Lee Beard.

Vijender is training under renowned trainer Lee Beard, who is mighty impressed with the Indian’s technical knowledge and power. Will he be able to cope with my speed and footwork?

“There’s so much hype around this fight anyone would think that it’s the main event!”

“I am totally focused and waiting for the moment to enter the ring. I am very excited about Saturday when the baby would be finally out and hopefully, he will create waves”, said the Brit. Since it was announced that I would be the opponent for Singh, I’ve been cast off as someone who’s in there to get a pasting from him. “I was an amateur boxer, now I am turning pro so everything has changed slowly but I am hardworking so I can do it”. He’s making his debut and I’ll give him a hard welcome to the professional game.

In an Amateur bout, if knocked down, a boxer gets 8 counts for a maximum of 3 times.

“He has dealt with pressure all his amateur career and that has helped him here”.
