Vikings rout Giants to clinch playoff berth
Tom Coughlin’s tenure as head coach of the New York Giants, which seemed bleak even before Sunday’s night’s bad loss to Minnesota, looks to be all but over now.

“He’s a guy a year ago, I recall, every time we got down to the red zone, the goal line, we would take him out”. But he has often said that he doesn’t consider his rookie players as rookies once they are on the team and have gone through the rigors of training camp and preseason like the rest of the players. He promised Monday that speculation about his job status “is not going to affect anything in terms of how I go about my business this week”, that nothing will stay him from the appointed round of preparing his team for the season finale against Philadelphia. So I got to take my hat off to him.
That might be easier said than done. “I will tell the team not to be distracted by it”, Coughlin said. “I think they believe, and half of the battle is believing”. I’m here for them. “We try like heck not to put these young men in a position where they feel badly about the circumstances that the head coach finds himself in”, Coughlin said in a rather short day-after news conference with the media. Toss in the dropped passes, most notably on fourth down, and the poor route running by Rueben Randle who after four years still isn’t on the same page as his quarterback and you have a passing game that is unacceptable and scary.
This team faces a ton of questions going forward.
Gillislee finished with 93 yards rushing and led a ground attack that totaled 236 yards for the Bills (7-8). Jennings also caught a screen pass that went for 50 yards and momentarily gave the Giants life on a cold night. Manning had no answers dealing with an offense devoid of suspended Odell Beckham Jr., and was intercepted three times.
-Safety Craig Dahl sustained a concussion in the third quarter of the game against Minnesota when he collided with cornerback Prince Amukamara. Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul might bring energy and fresh legs, but it’s becoming more and more obvious each week that he can not function as he should with his right hand in a club.
The Giants and/or Coughlin could make an announcement this week about the plans for next season, but his future would still be a talking point with players all week. He’s been steady down the stretch. Adrian Peterson, widely considered the league’s finest back, ran for 104 yards and a touchdown, and Jerick McKinnon escaped for a 68-yard touchdown run among his two scores. Whether you saw it at the time or not, the Tom Coughlin era was crashing to an ignominious close.

As for the Vikings, RT Matt Kalil injured his right leg in the fourth quarter, but the initial X-rays were negative. Simply put, the linebackers disappeared in the second half against the run, which made things too easy for quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and friends to march up and down the field easily. It most certainly could be, his seat is hotter now than it has ever been; even in the years he led the team to the Super Bowl. Also beyond belief were the two botched onside kicks that went horribly awry. “I wanted to do my job and do my job well, and get into the playoffs and have a big season so he could continue to be the head coach”. Eli Manning is thriving under offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo’s system, so McAdoo must be given another chance.
