“You have to kind of sustain a level of performance in the Championship to be able to come out of it at the end of the season”.
Di Matteo, who was in Beijing alongside chief executive Keith Wyness and owner Tony Xia as part of a promotional tour, described Villa as a house which needed to be knocked down and completely rebuilt.
This could definitely be a shrewd signing for Villa, but what are the risks of this deal?
The new regime has wasted little time in improving the squad, with Tommy Elphick, Pierluigi Gollini and Aaron Tshibola all arriving at the club, while other individuals have been shipped out with more activity expected.
The U.S. national team goalkeeper reportedly is set to sign with the newly promoted Premier League side on a free transfer from Aston Villa.
“It has many, many former Premier League teams, they are looking to get back into the Premier League, like we do”.
“I don’t think it is fair to judge people just on what happened in the last 12 months”, he said.
