Di Matteo, who was in Beijing alongside chief executive Keith Wyness and owner Tony Xia as part of a promotional tour, described Villa as a house which needed to be knocked down and completely rebuilt.

The new regime has wasted little time in improving the squad, with Tommy Elphick, Pierluigi Gollini and Aaron Tshibola all arriving at the club, while other individuals have been shipped out with more activity expected.

The U.S. national team goalkeeper reportedly is set to sign with the newly promoted Premier League side on a free transfer from Aston Villa.
