Villa’s defeat to Watford was painful – Garde

In fact, their paltry tally of five points is the equal lowest after the first 14 games of a top-flight season in the Premier League era.

Garde confirmed that he would not be involved in Saturday’s home game against Watford. Told that some will now be writing off Villa’s chance, the Frenchman said: “I heard that already, and it will be over if we carry on that way”.

As a side that rarely looks likely to score at present, they will not be best pleased to see Watford on the other side of the halfway line, as the newly promoted side have become a hard team to play against and are compact at the back.

“But there were mistakes”.

“But then we had a lack of efficiency in the offensive box and also in the defensive box”.

However, the former Lyon coach is sure the team can make the necessary improvements to end a run of 13 top-flight outings without a win and move towards safety.

Garde admitted it was “painful” viewing against the Hornets and was clearly frustrated by Alan Hutton’s “silly” own goal midway through the second half which surrendered the initiative and presented Watford with a 2-1 lead.

Aston Villa had never tasted a victory since its opening day win to another newly-promoted team Bournemouth in early August.

But since the Barclays Premier League resumed after the worldwide break Villa have suffered successive defeats to Everton and Watford, conceding seven goals in the process.

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores has heaped praises on the striking partnership of Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney.

“It is an unbelievable connection they have”, the Spaniard said. “We pressed the pitch really high, stopped the long ball coming in and they kind of struggled after that”.

“It’s awesome what they are doing different. You try to win always”.
