Village security beefed up after Australia theft
Athletes venturing to Rio who have the app will be able to open up the game while in Rio, but they won’t find any Pokemon, Pokestops or gyms in the country. Here’s hoping all the issues get sorted out ASAP, so we can enjoy what is shaping up to be – in a strictly sporting sense, at least – a fantastic Olympic Games.

A laptop and team shirts have been stolen from Australia’s accommodation at the Olympic athletes’ village while the building was being evacuated because of a small fire, the head of the team’s delegation at the Rio Games said Sunday. Mosquitoes carry the Zika virus, and many teams are using long-sleeved shirts for protection. “At the time I did not know [who they were]”. They were not team members.
“When I arrived, which was halfway through the evacuation, I saw three fire marshals – I don’t know who they were – walking out with team shirts”, she said.
Chiller said the fire was discovered because of smoke in the corridors and stairwells.
“That (the robbery) is concerning”, she said, claiming the security presence had since been increased with four private guards on the entrance doors and more noticeable identity checks.
But Rio is hardly the only city to be beset by big problems ahead of the games.
“We did lose some shirts and a couple of laptops, one on the fifth floor from a cycling official and one in the office downstairs”, Australian Olympic Committee spokesman Mike Tancred said. I’m not accusing anybody but there are a lot of non-accredited workers, cleaners, housekeepers, maintenance workers still walking around. Officials say a lit cigarette tossed into a trash bin caused the blaze but that fire alarms never went off.
She said she had received no reports of problems at any of the training sites or venues. There was also a pledge that the smoking ban would be enforced. They noted that an estimated 240 million people travel yearly to areas infected with the virus, and said 500,000 more in Rio was not a major threat.

The mosquito-borne virus has been linked to microcephaly, a birth defect among babies of pregnant mothers infected by Zika, and its discovery in Brazil a year ago led to concern over the Games, which are expected to attract some 500,000 visitors.
