It has not yet been made official, but Fran Escribá has been reported to be the new coach of Villarreal, according to reports.

Marcelino’s departure comes just days before a crucial Champions League playoff first-leg tie against AS Monaco, with Eurosport reporting that the Yellow Submarine are now looking to bring Pellegrini on board.

It’s understood that former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini is being targeted as a quick replacement as the club look to ensure the exit doesn’t ruin the upcoming season.

The 51-year-old Spaniard guided Elche into the top flight after an absence of 25 years in 2013 before taking charge of Getafe last summer.

His spell at Getafe was not as successful, and he was sacked in April after less than a season in charge following a run of 12 games without a win as Getafe eventually slipped to relegation.

Escriba began his managerial career as Quique Sanchez Flores’ assistant at Getafe, Valencia, Benfica and Atletico Madrid, before going it his own with Elche in 2012.
