Vincent Kompany injury mars good day for Manuel Pellegrini
Pellegrini attempted to ease his influential captain back into action as a second-half substitute after an eight-game absence as City cantered towards victory at the Etihad Stadium, but the Belgian lasted just nine minutes.

“Yes, it is a calf”.
Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany described himself as “invincible” on Saturday despite seeing his latest injury comeback last just eight minutes. As a result, City resumed their dominance immediately from the restart, with Silva’s bending shot brilliantly tipped around the post by Mannone.
City have failed to keep a clean sheet without Kompany this season, but Pellegrini insists his side can be successful without him and has ordered his players to rise to the challenge.
Ranieri said: “I think we made a very good match”. We have to play so many games in January that it was important for him to have fully recovered.
Kompany continues in his statement how passionate he is about the club and how strong his desire is to become the best defender he can be to help his club and country to be successful. “But if we win there we are on the same amount of points and we are there on top of the table with some other teams so at the moment everything is fine”.
The defeat was Sunderland’s third in succession and left them adrift in the relegation zone.
Bony fired a penalty over the bar after David Silva was felled and squandered at least two more chances.
Kompany first suffered a calf injury during a Champions League defeat against Juventus on Sept 15, and caused controversy by returning to play for Belgium in a Euro 2016 qualifier against Israel four weeks later, before Pellegrini thought he was ready.
It got worse for Sunderland when Wilfried Bony headed home, before a fourth arrived from the excellent De Bruyne early in the second half, as City continually took advantage of some terrible defending from the visitors.
City had the likes of Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero on the bench following their recent run with injuries this season.
In response to this, Allardyce opted for his first change of the day, Lee Cattermole – who he said he didn’t want to rush back – replacing Yann M’Vila, despite only returning to training this week.
“We have got a hugely hard period coming along”.

The Chilean did point out, however, that City have coped well without him in the past.
