Viola Davis won her Emmy for lead actress in a drama thanks to her role as a tough criminal defence lawyer in ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder.

I can’t seem to get over that line. Davis Credits Shonda Rhimes and other show creators for providing women with the roles needed to win an Emmy.

Perhaps Davis was speaking in character, as she is now working on her role as Harriet Tubman in an upcoming HBO biopic, or perhaps she is just our modern day Tubman. “Because I’m probably not going to get onstage”.

She then thanked “people who have redefined what it means to be handsome , to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be black”, before recognizing other actresses of color, including Taraji P. Henson, Kerry Washington and Gabrielle Union. It followed Uzo Aduba’s win for best supporting actress earlier in the evening.

It has been a long road to awards glory for Davis, a two-time Oscar nominee who remains wary of life in the Hollywood limelight.

This was the first time King had been nominated for an Emmy, and received the accolade to loud cheers from her fellow nominees including American Horror Story’s Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett. “That would be very unfortunate”.

Another noteworthy thing that happened during the Emmy Awards is that John Hamm, who was nominated 15 times for his work on “Mad Menfinally won the award for best actor in a drama.

Speaking before the show, 50-year-old Viola admitted to ET Online that she had “mixed emotions” about potentially making history, explaining: “I feel both excited and proud that one of us could be the first, but mixed emotions about it being 2015 and we’re still talking about it”. Allison Janney won her seventh Emmy.
