Violence against Women is Human Rights Violation

No country is immune from violence against women and girls, or exempt from the responsibility to put an end to it.

Violence has denied millions of women and girls’ ability and opportunities to contribute to the economic and social progress of Vietnam, said an official of United Nations (UN) in Vietnam on Tuesday.

“It is both a cause and a effect of gender inequality and discrimination”.

Its continued presence is one of the clearest markers of societies out of balance and we are determined to change that.

The proclamation states that during the First Women’s Global Leadership Conference sponsored by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL) in 1991, the 25th Day of November was set aside to be observed each year as the worldwide Day for the Elimination of violence against Women and December 10, 2015, worldwide Human Rights Day, in recognition of the violence against women as a human rights violation and called on governments to work towards its elimination. As we are celebrating the 15th anniversary of the UN Security Council’s milestone Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, the European Union and the global community must intensify their efforts to eliminate all such forms of violence and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Imagine how different the world would be for girls growing up now if we could prevent early marriage, female genital mutilation, the turning of a blind eye to domestic violence, abusive text messages, the impunity of rapists, the enslavement of women in conflict areas, the killing of women human rights defenders, or the hostility of police stations or courtrooms to women’s testimony of violence experienced.

Club members of Soroptimist global of Darlington and District have been wearing the colour orange in locations all over the world to raise awareness of violence against women. Some 125 countries have laws against sexual harassment, 119 have laws against domestic violence, but only 52 countries have laws on marital rape.

One out of three women experience physical or sexual violence, mostly by an intimate partner, in South-East Asia, including Nepal, according to World Health Organisation.

“It is our obligation to focus on the unwarranted situation of education for girls and boys, young women and men this year through the 16 days campaign”, Ms Essel said.
