Reportedly, students shot at each other and set university property, including the proctor’s office and several vehicles, on fire. This disorder was the result of old rivalry between the two groups. Police sources said one student was seriously wounded and warded in a Delhi hospital.

Officials said the violence broke out at around 2.00 a.m. when a room of a student named Mohsin, at the Mumtaaz hostel was set on fire.

The victim rushed to the proctor’s office to file his complaint.

Police said an FIR has been registered against eight persons including Mohsin Iqbal, a student of MA (Political Science) and seven others, most of whom are outsiders and former students, in connection with the killing of Mahtab.

Two students- Mehtab and Mohammad Waqif also got injured in the firing. The violence was so widespread that it took the police almost two hours to defuse the situation at different spots of the campus.

Security has been stepped up and Rapid Action Force has been deployed on the campus in wake of an entrance test to be held at the college today.

An AMU official earlier said that trouble between rival groups belonging to Azamgarh and Sambhal regions has been simmering since quite some time now.

On Sunday, vice chancellor Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah (retd) met the agitating students and tried to pacify them so that there was no further disturbance on the campus.
