Violence in southern India over water dispute

In the nearby city of Mysore, several vehicles were set ablaze and mobs of young men roamed the streets wielding iron rods, smashing windows of shops owned by people from Tamil Nadu.

A woman TV journalist and her cameraman were also beaten up by protesters during the violence in the tech city.

Bangalore City Police confirmed on Twitter that Section 144 was imposed which would last till September 14.

Meanwhile security had been tightened across the city to prevent attacks over the Cauvery issue and in view of Eid on Tuesday, said Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwar. Siddaramaiah has called an emergency meeting of his cabinet at 11 am on Tuesday.

The Siddaramaiah government asked Tamil Nadu to protect Kannadigas while assuring to safeguard Tamils in the state.

Karnataka said that while water storage in its Krishna Raja Sagara Dam was depleting, the storage level in Mettur reservoir in Tamil Nadu was increasing. Rampaging mobs set afire at least 30 vehicles bearing Tamil Nadu number plates.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned attack on Kannada speaking people in Tamil Nadu and damage of the properties belonging to people of Karnataka in Tamil Nadu and urged Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to initiate strict action against the miscreants.

He said a large number of people from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu live in the other state and have been making significant contributions to the development of the state of their choice of living.

The court will hear the matter next on September 20. He said such violence can’t be justified on any ground and particularly, after the direction of the Supreme Court.
