Virat Kohli rested for T20I Series against Sri Lanka

Indian prolific batsman Virat Kohli has been rested for the upcoming three-match T20 series against Sri Lanka, starting from February 9.

The world number one in ICC T20 rankings, Kohli has played 10 one-dayers and five T20s apart from four Test matches from the month of October to end of January.

Pawan Negi, the 23-year-old left-arm spinner, who chipped in with both bat and ball for India B during the recent Deodhar Trophy and for Delhi in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy earlier, was named in the 15-man squad.

Pacer Umesh Yadav, who had a tour to forget Down was dropped from the side.

India recalled Bhuvneshwar Kumar after the paceman sustained a thumb injury in Australia and missed the Twenty20 series.

The first of the three-match series will be played on February 9 in Pune. Vice-captain Virat Kohli who struck three back to back half-centuries against Australia, has been rested for the series. Youngsters Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah remain in the mix after showing enormous promise, while Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Ashish Nehra keep their places.

It was the only change made by BCCI’s selection committee to the team that beat Australia in a T20 series away from home recently.

The squad for the Women’s ODI and T20 series against Sri Lanka was also announced. Mithali Raj will lead the side, which is on a high after scripting history by beating three-time world champions Australia in a T20 series for the first time.
