Virgin Media Vivid 200Mbps broadband will be available to customers from October

In addition to bumping up the speed of its fastest packages, Virgin Media will also now refer to all broadband speeds of over 100Mbps as “Vivid” to cut through the super-fast/ultrafast confusion in terminology.

The upgrade will assist Virgin Media broadband customers on even the lowest available package to receive broadband speeds at the top end of the range available from providers operating on the BT network.

Like the last time Virgin Media did this, network upgrades will roll out in a phased manner, but customers who want to get a speed upgrade ASAP will be able to recontract with Virgin Media and get those new speeds ahead of schedule. This is the third time the company has boosted customer broadband speeds in five years, quadrupling the fastest speeds available from 50Mbps in 2010 to Vivid 200Mbps in 2015.

Virgin Media customers will be given the choice of upgrading for free from 50 Mbps to 70 Mbps, 100 Mbps to 150 Mbps and 152 Mbps to 200 Mbps.

By the end of 2015, 90 per cent of Virgin Media customers will have the opportunity to upgrade to faster speeds.

The new fibre broadband will bring speeds of up to 200Mbps to United Kingdom homes, which will allow users to download a two-hour HD movie in just three minutes.

Virgin Media is investing heavily in its ultrafast network to meet consumer demand.

“Our message is simple”, declared Gregor McNeil, Managing Director of Consumer at Virgin Media.

This Vivid branding will be applied to all of Virgin’s broadband services from 100Mbps and upwards, but all customers can benefit from the speed increase. Those on 50Mbps, 100Mbps or 152Mbps can upgrade to speeds of up to 70Mbps, 150Mbps and 200Mbps respectively.
