The spokesperson then turned their attention to Corbyn’s lies saying, “But we have to take issue with the idea that Mr Corbyn wasn’t able to be seated on the service, as this clearly wasn’t the case”.

Footage shows the Islington MP walking past rows of empty seats in the clip before sitting on the ground between carriages for a video blasting conditions faced by Britain’s commuters.

In a statement, his campaign said that at the beginning of the journey Corbyn “was unable to find unreserved seats, so he sat with other passengers in the corridor who were also unable to find a seat”.

Not for Mr Corbyn the temptation to pull rank as Leader of the Opposition and demand a seat or, heaven forfend, travel First Class.

Mr Tarry, also a political officer with the TSSA union, made the remarks during an east London rally for Mr Corbyn hours after CCTV images were released by Virgin Trains.

It also shows staff helping Corbyn to seats he used for the rest of the journey after.

Following the scandal, Corbyn’s contender for the labour leadership, Owen Smith wrote on twitter his campaign remained “on track” and that he was “proud to be genuinely standing up for ordinary people”.

The firm said there were additional empty seats on the train which were reserved but not taken, meaning they were available for other passengers to sit on.

Charles B Anthony, who filmed the original footage of Mr Corbyn on the train, said: “Corbyn wants to renationalise their business”. In his video, Corbyn praises the “absolutely brilliant” staff on the train.

He added: “Passengers across Britain will have been in similar situations on overcrowded, expensive trains. That is why our policy to bring the trains back into public ownership, as part of a plan to rebuild and transform Britain, is so popular with passengers and rail workers”.

But Mr Tarry told an event in support of Mr Corbyn’s leadership re-election bid: ” Some of you might have seen on social media today there’s been a little bit of a spat.
