“This is an important day for the future of fantasy sports”, said state Sen.
“Together we can reintroduce hundreds of thousands of Nevadans to fantasy sports products they love while also generating 10’s of millions of dollars for the state and the companies that are located here”, said Jason Robins, CEO Draft Kings. “The Texas Legislature will be in session in 2017 and we will work to pass legislation that protects fantasy sports and consumers so that we can bring our paid contests back to Texans as soon as possible”.
Daily fantasy sports websites like DraftKings and FanDuel are now legal in Virginia.
DraftKings and FanDuel took in a combined $3 billion previous year.
Virginia today signed into law the “Fantasy Contests Act”, a bill outlining how daily fantasy sport sites like DraftKings and FanDuel can operate legally in the state.
Many casinos and social advocacy groups expressed opposition.
Fantasy sports have been under fire in some states, and attorneys general in New York, Illinois and Texas have issued opinions that they are illegal games of chance.
“If you subscribe to the belief that tax policy does drive behavior, this clearly is a disadvantage for existing casinos”, said Jeff Boeyink, who represents Wild Rose Entertainment, which has casinos in Clinton, Emmetsburg and Jefferson. 339-would legalize DFS, but require operators to pay a licensing fee, ensure that participants are at least 18 years of age, and abstain from offering contests based on amateur sports (i.e., collegiate athletics), among other requirements. The full report will be published in May. Smaller season-long companies, which still allow players to win large sums of money, say the new law’s $50,000 fee is prohibitive, according to The Virginia Pilot, and may push them out of the state entirely. “We need to do much more”.
The nationwide debate over daily fantasy sports has focused on Texas for the last few days.
