Virginia makes strong statement with rare win at Duke

“An ugly win is a win”, Virginia’s sophomore guard said Saturday after the 65-63 win at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

“I was definitely surprised he took it”.

“My wife was sitting right behind me”, Bennett said. My hand was up and everything.

As a player, Bennett was a talented, tough, determined performer who made it a point to excel when the pressure was the greatest. “I guess he had the confidence to take that shot”.

Kyle Guy scored 17 points and hit two free throws with 6.1 seconds left, and No. 2 Virginia beat No. 4 Duke 65-63 on Saturday.

MEMPHIS – Gary Clark had 18 points and 9 rebounds, Jacob Evans added 14 points – including a pair of three-pointers to break Cincinnati out of a second-half shooting slump – as the No. 9 Bearcats defeated Memphis for their 12th consecutive victory.

Huff has appeared in 11 games for a total of 98 minutes, mostly with the outcome long decided, but teammate and fellow big man Salt played a total of 138 minutes in 2015-16 and subsequently has made 54 consecutive starts.

“The first half, our guys have not been in a game like that, and it looked that way”, Krzyzewski said. “I’m sure that fatigue was not the factor”.

Virginia never strayed from that approach, even when shots didn’t fall, even when Duke (18-3, 6-3 ACC) charged. It’s fair to wonder if they ran out of gas down the stretch.

“Definitely something I need to learn from”, Duval said. “We were a young team in the first half”.

Another surge, with Bagley and Carter combining to score all the points, gave Duke its first lead, 41-39, since the first few minutes of the game.

But neither of those teams has the offensive explosiveness the Blue Devils do, with Duke averaging roughly 11 more possessions per game than the Cavaliers.

Cameron Indoor was shaking, but the Cavaliers showed the type of poise synonymous with the second ranking in the country.

Then factor in upstart freshman De’Andre Hunter and Rutgers transfer Nigel Johnson as key contributors.

With 62 ticks on the Cameron scoreboard, Duke guard Trevon Duval attempted a long fast-break pass over the top of Virginia’s retreating defense to Marvin Bagley, but Jerome saw it and darted in front with the nimbleness of an National Football League defensive back, and picked off the pass.

NO. 5 KANSAS 79, TEXAS A&M 68: Svi Mykhailiuk had 24 points, Malik Newman added 15 and the host Jayhawks (17-4) cruised to their fourth straight Big 12/SEC Challenge victory. A costly turnover, certainly amplified by the fact that the very next play was Jerome’s clinching three-point shot.

“They’re going to come and trap you hard and be physical and so we’re going to have to pass and move out of it”, Allen said. The second-youngest team in the country (only Kentucky is younger) had its freshmen making all sorts of mistakes: Point guard Trevon Duval was sloppy at times and electric in others, as seems to be his M.O. this season.
