Virginia Tech’s Beamer goes out a victor

Even if the end result was fitting, the route to get there was unusual, especially given Virginia Tech’s struggles on offense in the last few seasons before Beamer announced his retirement.

Adding however, that it is very hard to do that in just two days. “It is not always the club that has to sack me”, said Van Gaal. They scored from a free-kick and then it was half-time.

Now, yes, Virginia Tech has won bowl games before, but this one is probably the most significant ever, because this game signaled the final time that legendary coach Frank Beamer would be at the helm of the Hokies.

Israeli officers gun down Palestinian
Officers approached a man they said was following Jewish worshippers, and asked to see his papers, spokeswoman Luba Samri said. Eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency that Israeli police shot Mosaab al-Ghazali, 26, and left him to bleed to death.

“The first time, we came to Shreveport, I left here a happy guy”, an elated Beamer said afterward “The last time I come to Shreveport, I leave here a happy guy”. The Hokies had a disappointing year, so Beamer’s players will surely be driven to send Beamer out on a high note.

Trump warns Clinton: Be careful
Most importantly, he’s the only person who says “I’ll be damned” if more Americans are sent to fight in the Middle East. In an interview Tuesday with The Des Moines Register , Clinton said: “I don’t know that he has any boundaries at all”.

“I may come back to Shreveport just for the hell of it”. With the twin retirements of Beamer and Steve Spurrier (228), there is no active head coach with 200 or more wins; Kansas State’s Bill Snyder, with 193, is the closest to hitting that plateau. The 45 points was greater than the final score in 18 previous I-Bowls and equaled the final score in the 2014 I-Bowl featuring Miami and SC.

The Hokies trailed 7-0 and 14-7 early in the game, as the two teams went back and fourth early and often in the first five minutes of the game. The game can be seen on ESPN.

The Golden Hurricane scored 21 points in the final 20 minutes sandwiched around a field goal by Slye, who tied the school record for field goals in a season with his 23 (Dustin Keyes, 2008).

The Hokies controlled most of the second half, but the Golden Hurricane scored on a 21-yard touchdown from Evans to Josh Atkinson and made the 2-point conversion to pull within 55-45 with 7:35 remaining. Virginia Tech was on pace to score 90 points at halftime, as they headed into the locker room up 45-31, looking like they’d take care of business and easily cover the 14 point spread, sending Frank Beamer off with a win in his last game.

All-ACC wide receiver Isaiah Ford led the way for the Hokies with a memorable night that included a 75-yard touchdown catch from Michael Brewer. He was voted the offensive player of the game.

Pinstripe Bowl – Duke 44, IN 41 (OT): Ross Martin kicked a 36-yard field goal IN overtime, and Duke won a bowl game for the first time IN 54 years at Yankee Stadium. The Golden Hurricane averaged 4.8 yards per attempt. “It’s something to be proud of, and I’ll always hang my hat on that”.

Virginia Tech is making its third Independence Bowl appearance (L, 1984; W, 1993). Foster’s defense gave up the most points in a half since the 2003 Insight Bowl, which the Hokies lost, 52-49, against a California team led by Aaron Rogers. Fittingly, the Beamer era finish was helped by a big special teams play, getting a 67-yard punt return for a score from Greg Stroman.

“Its exciting because they [Tulsa] are a very good offense”, says Luther Maddy.

“I feel like an old man up here”, Beamer said. “I would have kicked myself out a long time ago”.
