Virginia – West Virginia Concealed Weapons Permit Reciprocity Will Continue
The state of Virginia will cease recognizing concealed-carry gun permits from 25 other states, as the state has determined they do not meet the Commonwealth’s own standards for receiving a concealed handgun permit.

The states whose handgun permits will soon be invalid in Virginia are Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Herring’s decision to rescind reciprocity will likely result in preventing Virginians from concealed carry in other states.
Virginia Republicans and advocates of loose gun laws panned the move as politically-motivated and detrimental to gun rights vested in the US Constitution’s Second Amendment.
Leaders with the Attorney General’s Office say visitors to our state can still get a non-residential permit which takes roughly 30 days as long as they are eligible and pass the background checks for Virginia.
“The real losers of the Virginia Attorney General’s decision are law-abiding gun owners in half the states in our country”.
McLaughlin said, “If you take guns away from law abiding citizens … the only people that are going to have guns are criminals”. Examples of variations embody: ▪ A conviction of discharging a firearm in a public place in Virginia would deny somebody a hid handgun allow for 3 years of time of time; in North Carolina, it is allowed. And it should void this commonwealth’s reciprocity agreements with any state where concealed-carry standards are not as strong. These states therefore do not meet Virginia’s standards for issuance of a concealed handgun permit or for recognition of such permits.
Still, Thomm said it was his understanding that GOP lawmakers in Virginia were already, or would be shortly, drafting legislation to make Herring’s actions a “moot point” once legislation “to flip it back” is approved sometime next year.
Herring struck a blow for his state’s sovereignty Tuesday.
Herring said ending the reciprocity agreements is a “commonsense” step that blocks potentially unsafe or irresponsible persons from lawfully carrying a weapon in Virginia.
Unlike some states, IN does not differentiate between concealed carry and open carry licenses; permit holders are authorized for both. “We’re gonna enforce the laws as strictly as we can, that are on the books, but we could do a lot more”.

Denney suspects the changes could be used as justification from Herring and others in Virginia that North Carolina’s regulations on concealed handgun permits are now weaker. “I don’t know if that’s possible, but you never know until you try”.
