When the virtual reality headset launches on March 28, there will be 30 games available for all Rift owners. It’s extremely unpleasant as I have found out on many occasions on quite a few different VR systems in the past decade or so. But there needs to be a game that exploits the unique properties of VR to do more than be “immersive”.

Have you ever tried an Oculus Rift developer kit? In a lot of [non-virtual reality] games you can grab the camera and point it at something you want the player to see; you can’t really do that in virtual reality.

In addition to announcing its launch lineup today, Oculus also announced a new built-in experience for the Rift called Oculus Home.

As to why Chronos, a 3rd person adventure title was developed for VR at all, Adam’s says that the fixed camera perspective was something that they’re initial experience in VR game design had taught them. It appears that a lack of virtual realities for one to become immersed in will not be a problem. Reacting to statements that 2016 will be the year of VR, he believes that this will only be true to a limited extent. Until then, though, one hopes developers realize they have a chance to not just make the same games, but pioneer an entirely new form.

Eventually we want virtual reality to be used by hundreds of millions or billions of people. However, there is a shared experience in VR whether that be trying the headset with friends or the inevitable online world VR will come to encompass. This is a dead end.’ We have tons of ways to make this higher resolution, lighter weight and more comfortable.

When people get their hands on the Oculus Rift this month, they’ll receive the headset, sensor, Oculus Remote, cables, an Xbox One Controller and two games (EVE: Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale) for $600. “When there’s not a lot of movement and the controls aren’t tiring, I think you can be in VR indefinitely”.

The upcoming rollout of the Oculus Rift – a $599 headset offering studio-quality VR to the general public – is expected to jump-start industry sales. In the not-too-distant future, a VR headset could be a staple in most living rooms right alongside your TV or Xbox. That means you can look underneath ledges Lucky is standing on.
