Vladimir Putin calls ban on Russian Olympic athletes ‘discrimination’

No track and field athletes were among the contingent heading for Rio, since the entire track team is banned from competing, except for a single U.S.-based long jumper, following revelations of widespread doping.

All samples collected from Russian swimmers at the 2015 world championships are being re-tested. It brought in the workers as it races to address complaints over filth, poor plumbing and wiring at the Olympic Village ahead of the start of the Games on August 5.

The head of Russia’s trampolining federation, Nikolai Makarov, told TASS news agency that he had received “verbal permission” from the sport’s worldwide authorities for the team to take part.

Russia’s track and field team is being punished collectively for the actions of less responsible sportsmen who broke the rules and squad members were banned without proof against them, pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva told Putin.

Rowing’s worldwide governing body FISA was the latest to get tough with Russia, announcing that 22 of 28 Russian competitors had been banned under strict criteria imposed by the IOC.

TENNIS – All seven Russian tennis players have been cleared to compete in Rio by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
