Hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surprise decision to stop over at Lahore as a “path-breaking” departure from the “protocol-driven” politics between India and Pakistan, BJP today said there could not be a better day than the birth day of Atal Bihari Vajpayee for this.
“And the PM said to him, “Please come, you are our guest, please come and have tea with me”, he said.
The opposition Congress Party called Modi’s visit irresponsible and said that nothing had happened to warrant warming of ties between the rivals.
The visit comes more than two weeks after Modi and Sharif had an unscheduled meeting at the Paris climate change talks.
The joint statement issued during the visit said: “Russia regards India as a deserving and strong candidate that can bring an independent and responsible approach within the UN Security Council and reaffirms its strong support to India’s candidature for a permanent seat in a reformed UNSC”.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a key separatist leader in the Indian portion of Kashmir, said: “It’s a welcome step”.
After Sharif and Modi hugged at the Allama Iqbal International Airport as he landed in an Indian Air Force plane, the two took a helicopter to Sharif’s residence at Raiwind, about 40 km from here, officials here said.
After extensive talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined the need for the world to unite against terrorism “without distinction and discrimation between terrorist groups and target countries”, an apparent reference to sources of the menace like Pakistan.
Russian Federation and India vowed on Thursday to enhance military, nuclear and anti-terror cooperation in a bid to promote their “privileged strategic partnership”.
From hydrocarbons, the cooperation is now moving to the hardest form of carbon – diamonds, the Prime Minister said. Both the nations signed 16 new agreements. According to media reports, PM Modi gifted an Indian dress to PM Sharif’s granddaughter and Indian shawls to his wife Kulsoom Nawaz.
Foreign Secretaries of the two countries are also likely to meet in Islamabad next month. This was amplified when Modi said in his address to the Indian diaspora and Russian nationals that ties between the two countries go beyond trade and defence.

Appreciating the interest shown by Russian businessmen in Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor, Prime Minister Modi said they should also look at Chennai-Bangaluru and Amritsar-Kolkata corridors. Scheduled high-level talks between the two were cancelled in August after ceasefire violations across the border.
