Meanwhile, Ms Grimmie’s publicist Heather Walsh said: “It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord”.
The suspect “walked toward Christina and shot her”, the Orlando police said in a Twitter message.
Grimmie, from New Jersey, finished third during season six of NBC’s “The Voice”.
But she had begun amassing her fanbase on YouTube as a teenager with her covers of hit songs. Several of her videos on YouTube have garnered millions of views.
Earlier Friday, Grimmie posted a message on Twitter inviting fans to her concert.
Grimmie’s brother tackled the shooter who then fatally shot himself, Miglio said. Orlando police spokeswoman Wanda Miglio says the attack happened quickly. During the scuffle, the gunman shot himself and died.
Authorities have not said why the gunman opened fire, and an investigation is ongoing.
“We don’t know if he was just a insane fan that followed her on Twitter or on social media”.
Grimmie had been trying to carve out a solo career for herself.
Adam Levine and Lil Wayne both battled to sign the talented singer after she appeared on The Voice.
Preceding her death, Grimmie had been performing with punk rock band Before You Exit. “We are all praying hard that you can pull through this. this just isn’t fair”.
Fans, friends and celebrities showed an outpouring of sorrow on social media using #RIPChristinaGrimmie.
“The Voice” paid tribute to Grimmie on its official Twitter page: “There are no words”. “Rip to an unbelievable soul!” and Shawn Mendes wrote: “#RIPChristina i can’t believe it.
