Ternate’s Babullah Airport will be declared closed until Thursday as volcanic ash from the eruption on Wednesday morning enveloped much of its runway, local media reported.

A 4.6-magnitude quake triggered the volcano to erupt at 6:28 a.m. local time, spewing a column of ash by up to 600 meters high, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of national disaster management agency. The volcano had stopped violently erupting by Wednesday (Aug 3) afternoon.

On Monday, a volcano on Lombok, a resort island, caused the temporary closure of the island’s worldwide airport and cancelled flights from Australia to Bali.

The airport on neighbouring Bali, which attracts millions of foreign visitors every year, remained open but several flights between Lombok and Bali were cancelled while a handful of services between Australia and Bali were also axed.

Indonesia, which sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and home to 127 active volcanos, has been hit recently by volcanic eruptions.
