Volkswagen diesel recall in Europe will take year

All updated software will be installed as soon as it’s approved by US authorities.

Despite the upgrades, Volkswagen says while it wants to meet the emissions targets it set using the cheat software, “all model variants first have to be measured, (and) the achievement of these targets can not yet be finally confirmed”.

Presented to the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Germany, the updates so far concern the 1.6 and 2.0-litre four-cylinder Euro 5 diesel engines, and enable all affected vehicles to comply with emissions standards.

VW had initially denied the cars have software which alters nitrogen oxide emissions readings during official tests.

“We urge you to offer drivers the fair market value for these vehicles that was in place before VW’s illegal activity was made publicly known”, the pair wrote.

Beyond developing an effective fix for each of the three types of non-compliant 4-cylinder engines, VW must document any adverse impacts on vehicles and consumers.

Auto manufacturer Volkswagen, which has been embroiled in a scandal involving its cars’ emissions, will now take corrective measures to fix its faulty engine software, according to CEO Matthias Müller.

It says the updates will be relatively quick and should take no longer than 30 minutes. Engines that require that plastic filter could be handled in about an hour.

While Volkswagen won’t publicly discuss its plans for fixing the diesel cars, analysts have come up with several possible scenarios.

The flow transformer is a mesh that calms the swirled air flow in front of the air mass sensor and therefore allows measurements taken by the sensor to be more accurate. The goal is to smooth out the airflow through the intake.

In the wake of Volkswagen’s dieselgate emissions scandal, French manufacturers PSA – covering all Peugeot and Citroen models – has said it will provide real-world data for customers from spring 2016. Until someone tests pre- and post-fix cars back to back, it will be hard to know what effect the proposed solutions will have.

For example, since the beginning of October, all Volkswagen customers have been able to check for themselves whether their vehicle is affected by the diesel issue. Volkswagen is aiming to implement these updates as part of a recall to be introduced in January, with the recall process likely to extend over the whole calendar year.
