Volkswagen emissions scandal widens to cover more vehicles

In a press release from its headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, VW said that during its internal investigation of the diesel engine controversy, it had discovered irregularities related to Carbon dioxide emissions and fuel consumption in approximately 800,000 vehicles. Volkswagen also presented California regulators with a proposal to make those cars compliant with pollution standards. In total, there are more than 85,000 cars from the model year 2009 through 2016 equipped with the rigged diesel engine installed on large Audi, Porsche, and Volkswagen models. “You can’t recover from a scandal while it’s still growing”. “That should have been reported”, he said, adding that the agencies are now investigating whether that constituted intentional cheating on VW’s part.

The federal agency issued its statement after Volkswagen and Audi officials said in a meeting Thursday the technology in the newer cars was also in models dating back to 2009.

Audi of America had previously issued a stop-sale order for the A6 Quattro, A7 Quattro, A8, A8L and Q5 models from the 2013 to 2016 model years, company spokeswoman Jeri Ward said. Half of that amount could be spent anywhere, but the other half was limited to Volkswagen dealers, which upset many repcipients.

The recall affects cars with two-litre engines from models made in the years 2009-2015. However, he would not acknowledge that the system could be deemed as a kind of a defeat device. The devices further violate the air-quality laws of US. Volkswagen has admitted they have alternate exhaust control devices in their vehicles.

“We’re driving cautiously over the coming months, but we know where we want to go and we want to ensure that the Volkswagen company comes out of the current situation strengthened”, he told reporters in a short statement, without taking questions, after the 20-member board met at company headquarters.

Audi agrees that it will need to come up with additional measures that satisfy the regulators, Ward said. That is the message Volkswagen is sending to European owners of their cars that have been implicated in the massive emissions test cheating scandal.
