Set to hit USA showrooms this fall as a ’17 model, the Golf Alltrack is powered by VW’s 1.8L TSI turbocharged 4-cyl. that delivers 170 hp and 199 lb.-ft.(270 Nm) of torque. Later a six-speed manual will be available in the Golf Alltrack.
The U.S. production version of the new all-wheel-drive wagon debuted ahead of the 2016 New York Auto Show.
The model will reach dealerships starting this fall, and the Golf Alltrack has lost the SportWagen moniker, being similar to its European version that has already been out for around a year. For the Alltrack, that means taking VW’s Golf SportWagen and fitting the brand’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system, which defaults to front-wheel drive in the interest of fuel economy but can send up to 50 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels via a Haldex-5 coupling when slippage is detected. “We are excited to introduce the Golf Alltrack to meet the active lifestyle needs of our customers”. At launch it gets a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, but VW says a manual will follow later.

The vehicle is dressed in 17- or 18-in wheels, underbody protection and a unique front bumper with foglights and honeycomb grille. Silver detailing, including roof rails, matte mirror caps, and diffusor. Inside, Volkswagen has added leatherette upholstery on the seats, aluminum pedal covers, and ambient lighting to create a more premium look and feel. Standard equipment includes a 6.5-inch touchscreen and a backup camera, while adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and parking sensors with Park Assist are all optional. The Alltrack’s drive-mode selector adds an Off-Road mode, which activates hill-descent control and also reprograms the traction-control system.
