Volkswagen India to recall 3.23 lakh Cars: German Auto giant Volkswagen Group India subsidiary has recalled approximately 3,23,700 cars after a government probe found diesel engines fitted with 1.2-litre, 1.5-litre, 1.6-litre, and 2.0-litre EA 189 cheating emission tests. Volkswagen has been given eight months to complete the recall process.
The 2.0-litre diesel engine will require a software upgrade whereas the 1.6-litre EA 189 diesel engine will need a hardware and software fix according to the company.
“The Volkswagen Group India will first present the technical released solution to the ministry of heavy industries and ARAI”. Once approved by the competent authorities, the respective brands of the Volkswagen Group in India will carry out necessary changes in a step-wise manner.
The scandal, which forced Volkswagen chief executive Martin Winterkorn’s resignation, has weighed on the company’s finances. “[The company] will not deviate from its future planned investments, product plans and launches”, the statement added. Volkswagen could do something on the same lines in India to start winning back the trust of its customers. Therefore, over the second full month of sales since the beginning of the cheating scandal, the carmaker has just announced its USA sales dropped 25 percent to 23,882 cars in November, last month being the second-lowest one this year. The voluntary stop-sales were issued in light of notices received by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) regarding emissions compliance.
In an effort to counter the bad publicity, Audi suspended two of its top engineers after they confessed to installing the defeat device software in the vehicles.
The ARAI is a research association formed between the automotive industry and the ministry of heavy industries.
