“We are following a long-term investment plan in India and with our latest investment we have reaffirmed our confidence in this growing automotive market”, Volkswagen India President and MD Andreas Lauermann said.

German Carmaker Volkswagen India on Wednesday announced Rs 720 crore investment for development and production of a new compact Auto to take the likes of Honda Amaze, Swift Dezire and Hyundai Xcent. Long story short, the Volkswagen compact sedan is expected to get the 1.2-litre MPI petrol and the 1.5-litre TDI diesel for engine options. It will be interesting to see if VW adds an automatic transmission variant to the new vehicle.

Not named officially, VW India refers to this new auto as New Volkswagen Compact Sedan. Some reports say that the vehicle could revive the “Bora” name in VW’s line-up.

Coming to its competitors, recently launched Figo Aspire also offers dual-clutch automatic, however, only with the 1.5-liter TiVCT petrol. Currently, Tata Zest F-Tronic is the only compact sedan in the segment that offers diesel automatic. The manufacturing facility now rolls out the Volkswagen Polo, Volkswagen Vento and Škoda Rapid.
