The Northwestern Wildcats play the Tennessee Titans within the Outback Bowl on Fri., Jan. 1, 2015 begin time at 12:00 PM ET, at Raymond James Stadium. The Outback Bowl, formerly known as the Hall of Fame Bowl, will host a Vols program that boasts a 2-1 record in previous trips to Tampa. The Northwestern Wildcats (10-2) seek for an additional bowl game.
This is the second year in a row the Vols have been bowl eligible.
The Volunteers enter the game with records of 8-4 Straight Up (SU) and 7-5 Against The Spread (ATS) this season.
Three of Tennessee’s four losses this season were heartbreakers.
These two programs have met only once before, in the 1997 Citrus Bowl, where the Peyton Manning-led Vols prevailed easily.
The Wildcats have just two wins in 11 bowl appearances in program history and never have had an 11-win season. They took a 14-0 advantage in the first seven minutes of their game against Arkansas, but didn’t score another touchdown and lost 24-20. Redshirt freshman signal caller Clayton Thorson is a threat on the ground as well.
› 30-28 at Nebraska (Oct. 24): The Cornhuskers kicked a go-ahead field goal to open the fourth quarter, but Dan Vitale’s 37-yard touchdown catch and a short field goal made it 30-22 with seven minutes remaining. He paced the team with 33 receptions, 335 receiving yards and four touchdowns. But the Northwestern defense is the star of the team, limiting opponents to an average of 16.4 points per game, eighth-best in the nation. ” ‘Are we going to be the team that started off 5-0 and beat a team that’s playing in the Rose Bowl (Stanford) and a team that just won a bowl game (Duke and Minnesota), or are we going the team that decided not to show up and play?…” The Wildcats went 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS over the last five games.
“When you look at the team, we said, ‘We’ve got to make a decision who we’re going to be, ‘ ” Fitzgerald said. They boast an impressive two-back rushing attack in sophomores Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara. It has given up 173.6 passing yards per game during that span. Quarterback Joshua Dobbs completed 59.9 percent of his passes for 2,125 yards and 15 touchdowns against five interceptions.

Last year’s games provided one of the most memorable highlights when Wisconsin defeated Auburn 34-31 in overtime. Opponents have only thrown for 192.7 yards per game against this intimidating bunch. The Wolverines and Hawkeyes both rushed for over 200 yards and kept the Wildcats (10-2) from gaining 200 yards of total offense.
