Voluntary living wage rises to £8.25 today

KPMG said its research revealed that the proportion of workers earning less than the voluntary living wage had risen for three years in a row.

However, paying the Living Wage, which is is £9.85 an hour and £9.15 in London, is not compulsory and is above the national minimum wage.

A few six millionworkers in the United Kingdom are receiving salaries less than the national living wage, which is almost £8 (USD12) an hour, a new study shows.

Both reports are published to coincide with today’s announcement of new increases in the voluntary Living Wage.

“These employers are not waiting for Westminster to tell them what to do – their actions are helping to end the injustice of in-work poverty in Wales”.

The foundation argues the UK Government’s NLW represents “an exciting new stage for the minimum wage” but should not be regarded as a true living wage.

And in blackspots such as Rochdale and Oldham around a THIRD of positions are paid less than the living wage.

The Living Wage Foundation has launched an online interactive map as part of the Living Wage People’s Movement, detailing for the first time, all the accredited businesses and their branches that pay their staff at least the Living Wage, so that consumers and businesses can easily search for a Living Wage accredited employer to do business with or buy from.

Adam Corlett, economic analyst at the think-tank, said: “While you’d expect young people to move on to higher wages as they gain experience, the fact that they are moving jobs far less frequently today compared to before the crash is a real cause for concern”.

It will be paid to workers aged 25 and above.

According to the figures, young, female, part-time workers are the most likely to be paid less than the living wage.

Arfon Plaid Cymru MP Hywel Williams said: “The Chancellor’s much-lauded National Living Wage which he announced in the Summer Budget is to be welcomed”. In the United Kingdom, it began in 2001 and is led by the Living Wage Foundation and Citizens UK.

Nearly three in 10 men in their 20s are set to earn less than the Living Wage next year, it added.

“Treasury analysis shows women and those based outside London and the South East will be the biggest winners when the new national living wage comes into force”, she said. When looking at the North West as a whole, employees in West Lancashire are the worst off, with 40 per cent of the working population earning below the Living Wage, while 37 per cent and 36 per cent of employees in Rossendale and Wyre are paid less than £7.85 per hour respectively.

Mr Osborne’s version will be just £7.20 from April and is not adjusted for people working in London. Not only will they be hammered by cuts to tax credits, but people under the age of 25 won’t be allowed to benefit from the increase in the minimum wage…
