Volunteers Prepare Salvation Army Thanksgiving Meal

Today is Thanksgiving. It’s about giving thanks, coming together as a family for a special meal, and enjoying the start of the holiday season. “We don’t have nobody to call…we just got each other”.

One-hundred kettles are set up across Birmingham this year.

Director of development John Mitchell says Salvation Army have prepared enough meals for however many people may come to the shelter.

Every year, The Salvation Army of Lee, Hendry, and Glades Counties offers a traditional Thanksgiving meal to anyone in need.

“The volunteers knocked on the doors of more than 750 shut-ins this Thanksgiving morning”. We just couldn’t do it without them. Many there have fallen on hard times, but for at least one night, they had a community to lean on.

“Volunteer bell ringers are a huge help for us”, he said.

“We don’t have nobody here”, Martin said.

The volunteers are put to work and they say it’s worth it.

Consider donating some non-perishables to the Salvation Army, Douglass Community Center or The Food Bank.

“It just makes you feel good to do this”, Vigliaturo said. They’ll stay out until 2 p.m. Christmas Eve, and the goal is to have them raise $75,000 in that time.

“We fundraise, we do benefits, and we help out the people in need”, said club president Jesus Contreras. She coordinates the food distribution for Christmas and Thanksgiving, he said.
