Volunteers to place wreaths at veterans’ cemetery

During the holidays, it is a time for joy and giving, but also a time to be thankful for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for us to have the freedoms we do today – and for Darien to remember and honor a significant part of the town’s history.

Due to weather conditions, Wreaths Across America at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at WaKeeney, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. In past years, the ceremony has been held at Forest Lawn. So, as the people are laying the wreaths, they are going to quietly say the name on that marker. “And I felt like we let them down”. The short video provides a glimpse into the efforts of Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company and founder of Wreaths Across America.

An extra $250 raised by the Legion was donated to Wreaths Across America, a national initiative that places wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery and 1,100 other locations across the globe.

A cadet with the Junior ROTC or a family member will lay a wreath in memory of someone who has died in recent conflicts.

“We are fortunate to have the very same wreaths and trucks that are on their way to Arlington, stop in Schuylkill Haven so that we may deliver the same message of thanks to those who served in our nation’s military”, Miller said. Fort Gibson National Cemetery is located at 1423 Cemetery Road, Fort Gibson. “People are invited to come and pay respects in a safe indoor location, with a ceremony that will feature a color guard, and readings by local clergy and veterans”.

Local youths will place wreaths against headstones marking military grave sites at McClellan this weekend as part of an annual ceremony.

Benton notes that the mission of “Wreaths Across America” is to remember, to honor and to teach. Among 14 Revolutionary War veterans interred there is Capt. John Soder, who was with Gen. George Washington at Valley Forge.

Afterward, Elks Lodge 332 will serve hot chocolate. This year, it is joined by Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph. “Then there’s a ceremonial placement of each of the branches of service wreaths”.

The American Legion will give a rifle salute, and Taps will be played.

Since 2008 Congress has issued a proclamation each year officially recognizing “Wreaths Across America Day” in December.

“This year, they have a partner program which is the Living History”, veteran and re-enactor Robert Yott said.

Members of the Antlers, a program for junior Elks in middle and high school, also will participate.
