The automaker still needs to settle with the Chinese government which cities will be used during testing, and regulations and infrastructure will be the top issues when making the decision. No date has been set for the tests.

Since China is the world’s largest new vehicle market, Volvo believes that the country could also start a revolution in the field of self-driving cars.

It is no secret that many carmakers are working on self-driving vehicles.

Erik Coelingh, senior technical leader for safety and driver support technologies at Volvo said that the company is trying to understand how autonomous driving this can bring an impact to society and customers as well.

“There are multiple benefits to AD cars, that is why governments need to put in place the legislation to allow AD cars onto the streets as soon as possible”.

It is conducting a similarly vast 100-car experiment in Gothenburg, Sweden concentrating on the next generation of autonomous technologies and as far as current generation technologies are concerned, its new flagship S90 sedan is the first vehicle to go on sale in the United States with a semi-autonomous highway pilot system as standard equipment.

However, fully autonomous cars will not be the only solution provided by Volvo for the elimination of deaths and serious injuries on the passengers of their cars by 2020, as the carmaker has a well-known focus on passive and active safety.

The self-driving cars have the ability to sort out problems related to traffic jams but the technology still has a long way to go.

“We’re providing technology which allows you do something else behind the steering wheel, which means the technology itself needs to be very, very robust, the auto needs to be able to deal with all potential traffic scenarios”, said Coelingh, according to ZDNet.
