Volvo’s First All-Electric auto Will Debut in 2019

Volvo has revealed plans to offer plug-in hybrids across its range, a new range of electrified compact cars and a new, all electric vehicle on sale by 2019. Volvo expects 10 percent of its auto sold globally will be electrified by 2020.

Volvo already offers plug-in hybrid versions of its S60, V60 and XC90 models, and the next to be electrified will be the new S90 sedan.

In addition, Volvo will use plug-in hybrid powertrains with its new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) for small cars.

David Muller is the automotive and business reporter for MLive Media Group in Detroit. Removing human influence by making cars drive themselves offers a great opportunity to make driving safer, Volvo believes, as people are often the top cause of crashes.

Among the first cars – if not the first – on the new platform will likely be Volvo’s XC40 small SUV.

It has been quite a long while since Volvo released a new hatchback and this explains why many are excited for the V40.

The new platform is crucial to Volvo’s development plans, which call for a major assault on the premium compact market.

Both CMA and the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform that debuted with the current-generation XC90 were created to accommodate electrification from the outset.

Volvo’s pledge applies in any situation when the car’s technology causes an accident, according to the company’s chief technical officer.

The company forecasts that the implementation of the electrification strategy will result in up to 10 percent of its total cars sales being electrified vehicles in the medium term. The components CMA will share with SPA platform includes combustion units, plug-in hybrid components along with several parts on which infotainment, climate, data network and safety systems will be based.
