Volvo XC90: Still Safest SUV In The World?

Volvo has always prided themselves on how safe their offerings are and this is definitive proof that they’ve done their homework and offered an SUV that surpasses all safety expectations.

“That rating goes to vehicles that not only pass the IIHS” crash safety tests, but whose collision prevention systems work as advertised.

And so it wasn’t a big surprise when the new Volvo XC90 was recently awarded the “Top Safety Pick+” rating from the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Lexus ES was able to avoid a collision during a track test running at 12Mph and 25Mph.

“Every Volvo now rated by IIHS has earned a Top Safety Pick+, we are the only automaker that can claim that proud distinction”, said Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, “the XC90 is the next step in our Vision 2020, which states that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo auto by the year 2020”.

The minicar has a standard low-speed front crash prevention system that earned an advanced rating.

The list of safety features for the 2016 Volvo XC 90 is both long and reassuring. It automatically gives the XC90 full marks in the front crash test category. IIHS noted that in the stringent small overlap test, driver space held up very well, with less than 2 inches of intrusion at all points measured, while the crash dummy’s head movement was well-controlled, and the front and side curtain airbags worked well together to protect the head. “Measurements taken from the dummy showed a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity”.

When the 2016 Volvo XC90 contacts the barrier, it simply shifts to the side and maintains momentum, rather than absorbing the full brunt of the energy from the crash.

The standard features offering of the 2016 Volvo XC90 is the largest and most sophisticated and technologically advanced among competitors.

But it’s not just technology that sets Volvo apart in safety-it’s also founded in research. Adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring are available on these models as well.

Volvo also developed a feature called safe positioning, that during off road driving, the 2016 XC90 can detect what is happening and read the sign information on the road using a camera located behind the windshield.
