Vonn’s latest title overshadowed by social media gaffe

Lindsey Vonn has issued a mea culpa after a video showing her angrily attacking the bindings of her skis with a hammer overshadowed her skiing exploits on Saturday.

Attention before the racing on the Italian side of Mont Blanc had focused on Vonn’s daring second appearance in the famous SI publication, her first back in 2010 before claiming Olympic gold in the downhill.

Despite missing out on the victory and the chance to close further on the all-time record of 86 World Cup wins by Ingemar Stenmark, Vonn could take comfort from wrapping up her eight World Cup downhill title, with just one race in the discipline left this season, and 20th career crystal globe.

‘The video was posted on social media to express my emotions but I understand how it could be misinterpreted, ‘ Vonn said.

Gut, who won an opening World Cup downhill on Friday, was well off the pace of 1min 24.80secs set on a course shortened due to strong winds on the upper section of the piste.

“Also, the snow changed a lot and you know, I was really disappointed after yesterday, so I just kind of pushed the reset button and just tried it from new, and I think that worked well”. Larisa Yurkiw of Owen Sound, Ont., was 0.93 off the lead in fourth place. Sweden’s Stenmark held the previous record of 19 globes established from 1975 to 1984.

Though she came in second to Italy’s Nadia Franchini, Vonn leads the downhill competition by 173 points.

Laurenne Ross posted her third top-five downhill result of the season Saturday.

It was just the second World Cup victory in the career of Fanchini, the first coming in a super-G at Lake Louise in 2008 and came hard on the heels of her third place in Friday’s race. “And to do it at home in front of my fans is extra special”.
