Vonn ties mark with 36th World Cup downhill

Former Austrian skier Annemarie Moser-Proell (L) gives a thumbs up next to Lindsey Vonn of the US after Vonn won the Women’s Sprint Downhill race of the Alpine Skiing World Cup in Zauchensee, Austria, January 9, 2016.

Vonn leads the World Cup super G standings by 80 points over Cornelia Huetter.

Vonn moved within 58 points of Gut (658pts) in the overall World Cup standings with the victory and she is now 50 points clear of Huetter (250pts) in the downhill table. The current overall leader, Lara Gut, did not finish her opening run and scored no points.

Viktoria Rebensburg led Vonn by 0.35 at the final split time but the German had a costly mistake in the final part of her run and finished outside of the top 10.

Last month, Vonn also credited Buck Hill for helping her to a rare World Cup giant slalom win under floodlights at Are, Sweden.

“I went home and I felt much better”.

Not bad for a graduate of Buck Hill where Vonn started as a pure slalom skier on slopes with little vertical drop.

“I definitely didn’t expect such a big advantage going into the second run”, said Vonn.

American Lindsey Vonn took another step towards Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86 World Cup wins with her 73rd career victory in a super-G race in the Austrian resort of Zauchensee on Sunday. The rest of the field had to make up at least 1.23 seconds on Vonn in the final run.

“Today after the first run I thought this is my chance to show what I’ve learned'”, said the Canadian, who is traveling the World Cup circuit with her own team. “I’ll take that with me”.

The last super-G Vonn didn’t win was in Bankso, Bulgaria, in March past year, as she placed third behind victor Anna Fenninger and runner-up Tina Maze. Only Katja Seizinger of Germany won more super-G races in a row – five in 1997.

Saturday’s race was the first Vonn had entered in the new year after taking a break last week to spend time with friends and family.
