Vail’s Lindsey Vonn completed her third Lake Louise sweep on Sunday, winning a super-G after back-to-back downhill wins on Friday and Saturday.
(CNN)Lindsey Vonn’s record-breaking love affair with Lake Louise continues.
These days, on this course, it nearly seems that simple for the American standout. With her smoothest of three runs all weekend, Vonn unseated race leader and practical unknown Tippler. In 2013, Vonn was injured in a training run barely two weeks before Lake Louise, reinjuring her right knee, and settled for 40th and 11th in downhills and fifth in the Super-G. Shiffrin finished a respectable 15th.
Tamara Tippler of Austria was second 1.32 seconds back of Vonn. The margin of victory was the largest in a women’s super-G since 1997, according to information provided by the U.S. Ski Team. Fellow Austrian Cornelia Huetter (1:21.14) claimed bronze.
Vonn had earlier won Friday’s downhill by half a second. Vonn also accomplished the feat at the Alberta resort in 2011 and ’12. The overall crown goes to the skier who earns the most points over all disciplines – downhill, super-G, giant slalom and slalom.
“It was a big deal”, said Vonn. “I feel like there were some people that doubted whether I could win today, and especially because Lara (Gut) had won the last couple races here in super-G”.
Lake Louise vaulted Vonn to the top of the overall World Cup leaderboard just four points up on US teammate Mikaela Shiffrin. Laurenne Ross was 12th, Shiffrin 15th and Stacey Cook 17th.
“It’s just astounding to me how good of an understanding she has of the terrain, above everybody else and knowing exactly when to let her skis go”, Shiffrin said.

In any race, Vonn finds herself in the vortex of the pressure – not that she minds. “I think the good thing is I’m feeling more confident in being aggressive”, Yurkiw said. “What I hear is that I was pretty good on the flats, and that’s probably a spot where everyone expected me to be slow”. “But it’s just not something I really want to focus on…The more you think about it, the farther you are from breaking it”. “So I would say it was a pretty decent run, but looking back you can always say you could do better”. “In general, she’s such a technically sound skier and she has such a great feel for the snow”. “I’m sure once she gets the hang of it, she’s going to be unsafe”.
