The polls will be open from 7 a.m.to 8 p.m.
HARRISBURG – Attention is shifting from a well-worn campaign trail to the voting booths as Pennsylvanians cast ballots Tuesday on presidential primary contests, including the first competitive Republican primary in decades, and races for Congress and state offices. Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton campaigned in Philadelphia yesterday, where 189 Democratic delegates are up for grabs.
Candidates on the Republican ballot are Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Donald J. Trump, John R. Kasich, and Uncommitted.
Polls close at 8 p.m.
The convention delegate candidates from each voter’s congressional district are down the ballot. On the Republican side, the nomination is sought by Brian Fitzpatrick, brother of the incumbent and a former agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation; former longtime Bucks County Commissioner Andrew Warren; and psychologist Marc Duome.
In the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, retired admiral and former U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, former state secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection Katie McGinty, Braddock Mayor John Fetterman and Robinson Township business owner Joe Vodvarka are running for the nomination to face unopposed incumbent U.S. Sen.
RCP data also gives Clinton a double-digit lead over her Democratic rival in the state’s primary, with 54 percent of the vote compared to Sanders’ 38 percent. “But I think Trump is a bigger bully”, Seyler said at a polling place in Hamburg, Pennsylvania.
Meanwhile, pollsters expect Democratic Party turnout to be lower than it was in 2008, when 2.3 million voters, or almost 56 percent, cast ballots in the race between Clinton and then-Illinois Sen.
The nation’s eyes on Tuesday will be on CT, a state unaccustomed to having its presidential primary carry much weight. Meanwhile, pollsters expect Democratic Party to be lower than it was in 2008, when 2.3 million voters, or almost 56 percent, cast ballots in the race between then-Illinois Sen.
In Wyoming, Sanders won by 56 percent in the popular vote in the state caucus; however, Clinton still took the majority of democratic delegates.
Rather, the delegate candidates who are elected – three in each of Pennsylvania’s 18 congressional districts – can vote for whomever they want at the convention, and the candidates’ campaigns are seeking to woo their support ahead of time. Pat Toomey in November.
Another watched contest is for U.S. Senate, but the battle lies with the Democrats as Republican U.S. Sen.
State election officials hope voter turnout will be high, given a surge in voter registration. The fall contest could help determine control of the U.S. Senate.
The victor of that race will face incumbent Republican state Rep. Jim Christiana of Brighton in the general election. Democratic incumbent Rep. Chaka Fattah, a 1986 Fels Institute of Government graduate, is running against three other candidates: Dan Muroff, Brian Gordon and Dwight Evans.
