Voting Need-to-Know

At every polling place and early voting site, voters can take a ballot selfie with their unmarked ballot and their “I Voted” sticker in front of a ballot selfie poster.

“I think our voter turnout will probably exceed our 2012 presidential election numbers”. “Any Minnesotan with questions about where they vote, what’s on their ballot, or their rights as a voter should visit mnvotes.org for all their voting needs”. It’s punishable by a fine and up to a year in prison. Unlike voter fraud, however, there’s little ambiguity about voter intimidation: even the ACLU agrees that it’s “rare and unlikely”.

What time can I vote?

Violence or threats of violence are banned. If someone outside the polling place is campaigning, let someone at the polling place know. The Voting Rights Act drew a clear line in the sand against using violence to prevent people from voting. Clicking on either – or by typing a variation of “Where to vote” in either English or Spanish in the search bar – will bring up a section to put in your address, which will then show you your polling place, a map and the hours of operation.

Poll watchers, however, as well as employees of the county auditor’s office, precinct election officials and observers at satellite voting locations are not allowed to wear political items while at the polling place. But data from the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights in Washington, D.C., shows there are only 644 physical locations, part of a statewide trend of cutting polling places.

Enforcing polling rules is a fine line, best left to officials.

In the state’s most populous counties, Mecklenberg and Wake, tens of thousands more people voted early than in 2012, although the margins were smaller in Guilford and Forsyth counties.

Voter roll purges: Several states have attempted to conduct sweeping purges of voter rolls, potentially undoing voters’ registration without their knowledge. They’ve removed people from the qualified voter file that needed to be removed, people who have moved or were deceased. Some states allow exceptions to their laws, but the process of obtaining an exception can be arduous, especially for poor, time-constrained voters.

It’s finally here. November 8 – the latest possible day that Election Day can fall on the calendar – has arrived at last. While your first instinct might go to vote rigging, the real culprit is likely old, clunky touchscreens. (Under state law, only two hours of it has to be paid, and your boss may make you take it at the beginning or end of your shift).

To find out if you’re registered, go online and click on “check your registration info”, select your state and plug in the required information. And now, you’re ready to vote.

Though he expected a line, a 90-minute wait was not anticipated, but when asked if he’s happy to wait that long to vote: “No problem”. If you have an absentee ballot at home, you need to make sure that it’s in the mail and actually postmarked by midnight.
