VP hopeful Kaine introduces himself – again – to Iowans

Democrats gathered in Philadelphia formally selected Tim Kaine as their U.S. vice-presidential candidate on Wednesday, completing the party’s ticket for the November election.

Georgetown University’s Mo Elleithee, who was Hillary Clinton’s former press secretary, joins WSJ’s Gerald F. Seib at the Democratic National Convention to discuss Bill Clinton ridiculing the GOP’s characterizations of his wife, and whether vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine can appease all wings of the Democratic party.

“Hey, Donald, what’re you hiding?” said Kaine, demanding that Trump release his tax returns.

The crowd chanted their response: “No”.

Kaine says his father-in-law remains a Republican, but is voting for Democrats because “any party that would nominate Donald Trump for president has moved too far away from his party of Lincoln”. Kaine nimbly followed with “we should all feel the Bern and we should not want to be burned by the other guy”, which was not in his prepared speech.

“Donald still says ‘believe me.’ Believe me?”

Kaine took a swipe at Trump for his business record, his credibility and his proposals to build a wall along the Mexican border, mocking Trump for his habit of saying the same two words right after he makes his biggest promises – “believe me”. He later added that he doesn’t “believe one word that comes out of Donald Trump’s mouth”, and called him a “one-man wrecking ball”.

He concluded by saying Clinton is the opposite of Trump – she’s “lista”, or “ready” in Spanish.

“Is there anyone in this building who believes him?”

“With Hillary, it is not just words, it’s accomplishments”, Kaine said. “I’ve been a lieutenant governor to a great governor, Mark Warner and DNC chair supporting a great president, President Barack Obama, so I know how to be a supporter and I know how to be an advocate for somebody”. “Ready to fight, ready to win, ready to lead”, Kaine said amid cheers and applause from thousands of party delegates, leaders and supporters. “She’s ready because of her experience”, Kaine said. “The next president will face many challenges”, Kaine said. “We had better elect a candidate who has proven she can be trusted with the job”, he said.

And among the people who’ll be reminded of it is Trump himself.
