VP of Supreme People’s Court probed for graft

Chinese state media announced on Sunday that the second most powerful official in the highest court in China has been detained under suspicion of “severe violations of discipline and the law”.

The statement gave no further details of the charges.

According to Reuters, Xiaoming, was the number four official in the Supreme People’s Court, he specialized in economic cases.

It is not known if he has been sacked but his biography has been removed from the court’s website, Reuters said.

The public investigation of Xi Xiaoming, is the first of a Supreme People’s Court vice president since Huang Songyou, who was sentenced to life in prison in 2010.

The deputy head of China’s sports administration, Xiao Tian, is also being investigated.

BEIJING: The vice president of China’s highest court has been put under investigation, the ruling Communist Party’s anti-corruption agency said, the most senior member of the judiciary to be probed as part of a highly publicized anti-graft campaign.

The fourth-ranked judge on China’s Supreme People’s Court, Xi had been associated with company law reforms and led a panel that ruled on China’s first antitrust case.

China’s top leaders have pledged to continue combating graft among both “tigers” and “flies” – top leaders and lowly officials – as a matter critical to the ruling Communist Party’s survival. The most recent announcement may point to the beginning of corruption probes into the judicial system.
