Vulnerable Democrats welcome Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh
“Mr. Kavanaugh, is the president above the law?” The messaging initially centered on the future of abortion rights in the USA under a court with Kavanaugh on it.

Kavanaugh was a front-runner for the nomination ever since Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement on June 27.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions.
And they certainly want Trump’s choice confirmed before the November election, when Democrats have a long-shot chance of retaking the Senate majority. Kavanaugh would be less receptive to abortion and gay rights than Kennedy was. Kavanaugh and Gorsuch served as law clerks to Kennedy at the same time early in their legal careers.
He is now a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
“We should be very concerned that this nominee has been vetted by the Heritage Foundation, whose goal is to repeal the ACA and the protections it provides”, Sen. “If you’re going to say “I’m going to support him” today or “I’m not going to support him” today, then you’re not doing the job we’re here to do”. Susan Collins of ME, let it be known Tuesday that she’s not buying the argument that the judge is unfit for the high court.
Many Democrats have latched onto Kavanaugh’s statement about investigations into presidents. “I think we should have the hearings; let’s lay out the facts”.
A divided Supreme Court ultimately upheld that mandate as a tax.
“Rehnquist’s dissenting opinion [in Roe…] stated that under the Court’s precedents, any such unenumerated right had to be rooted in the traditions and conscience of our people”, Kavanaugh summarized. But if Kavanaugh is Trump’s choice, he likely would step away from pending cases.
Stabenow said in a Monday statement that the vacancy “represents a very consequential moment for our country where we can chose to make progress on so many important issues for MI families or we can turn the clock back”. “They were going to war over it, and it all just continues to destroy their credibility”, Gohmert told Fox News. But Amar made an impassioned please to other Democrats, suggesting that their reading of Kavanaugh may be overwrought.
During his presidential campaign, Trump had called for “total and complete” block on Muslims entering the US.
It’s hard to imagine Trump, the cynical dealmaker, not striking one with a Supreme Court nominee while the Mueller investigation is still hanging over his head.
“We’ve got a few Democrats on Justice Gorsuch and we’re hopeful that we’ll have a few of them on this nomination as well”, McConnell said during his weekly press availability.
“This incredibly qualified nominee deserves a swift confirmation and robust bipartisan support”, Trump said.
Senators are trying to frame the debate before Trump’s 9 p.m. announcement. Richard Blumenthal of CT, another Democrat on the committee, said when asked if Democrats were simply trying to slow down the fight. He would take the bench in August, as Kennedy retires July 31.
“To be a good umpire and a good judge, don’t be a jerk”, Kavanaugh said in a speech three years ago.
“We need to look at his record, and his record isn’t only as a judge”, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, which will determine whether to recommend him to the full Senate.
WASHINGTON ― In 2005, a group of workers at a meatpacking plant in Brooklyn voted to join a union. John Thune of South Dakota, a member of Senate GOP leadership, when asked about the document requests related to Kavanaugh’s time in the Bush White House.
“If I’m a betting man, I’d bet a substantial sum of money that Kavanaugh would be of a view that religious groups have a free-exercise right to participate in any kind of general public funding program”, he said. He cites involvement of the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank in drafting the list.
But any Republican defections could be offset by centrist Democrats campaigning for re-election in conservative-leaning states Trump won handily in 2016. The race is not expected to be competitive. But the two Republicans dodged questions from reporters on Tuesday and gave little sign that they were opposed to the pick. “I’ve voted against ideologically extreme judges that do not reflect Maine’s values a number of times before, and, if my research indicates that Judge Kavanaugh is another such nominee, I will not hesitate to do so again”.
As how Kavanaugh would rule on the highest court, perhaps the most encouraging evidence comes from a speech he delivered a year ago to the American Enterprise Institute on the legal philosophy of the late Chief Justice William Rehnquist, whom he called “my first judicial hero”.
Republicans are eager to have a new justice in place when the Supreme Court begins its new term in October.

“The people who are on the wrong side of the culture are the Left”, he said. He dissented from a ruling that let an undocumented immigrant teenager get an abortion while in federal custody.
