VW diesels have new software affecting emissions tests

Other federal agencies that are probing the automaker include the Justice Department and Environmental Protection Agency.

Just last month, Volkswagen admitted to cheating on the emissions test by fitting engines with a software that would adjust pollutant levels during lab tests down to legal limits.

“We’re getting a few answers from them, but we do not have all the answers yet”, Janet McCabe, acting assistant EPA administrator for air quality said.

“We are very aware that we can only implement these innovations for the future of Volkswagen brand effectively if we succeed with our efficiency program and in giving our product range a new focus”, Diess said.

Until those questions are answered, 2016 Beetles, Golfs and Jettas will remain parked in USA ports, prohibited from being sold. Diesel versions of the Passat sedan manufactured at the company’s plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, also are on hold. Volkswagen already faced an ongoing criminal inquiry and billions in fines. Like New York, the state of California, which has its own auto emissions standards, has said it would not to automatically fail affected VW diesels at inspection.

“I was already sold on the fact that my previous vehicle was a Volkswagen, so I was there”.

It seems that the software causes the catalyst that turns harmful nitrogen oxcides into nitrogen and harmless gasses to heat up extra quickly. “This has the function of a warmup strategy which is subject to approval by the agencies”, Jeannine Ginivan, a VW spokeswoman told AP.

Volkswagen United Kingdom managing director Paul Willis also said “the level of information to customers needs to be faster and needs to improve”.

Automakers routinely place auxiliary emissions management units on passenger automobiles, although they’re required by regulation to reveal them as a part of the method to obtain the emissions certifications which are required to promote the automobiles.

The EPA plans to evaluate a different type of emissions control device in 2016 model year Volkswagens that feature the 2.0-liter TDI engine, but it has not made a decision about the legality of the device, according to a report from Reuters.

The manufacturer has yet to confirm whether it will be providing any form of financial recompense to owners of cars fitted with the “defeat device” software that triggered the current crisis for the company. “I feel bad because I feel I’m polluting more, I was hoping to go the other direction”, said Richards.

The VW Group, which eclipsed Toyota in the first half of the year to become the world’s top-selling vehicle maker, saw its European market share dip to 23.3 percent from 23.6 percent in September 2014. However, Horn’s assertion left unclear whether or not the difficulty with the 2016 fashions was the identical as that within the earlier fashions, or whether or not it probably constituted a new violation.
