This second diesel-related notification of violation for the year from the U.S. EPA – sent to Volkswagen AG, Audi AG, Volkswagen Group of America, Porsche AG and Porsche Cars North America – outlines that the diesel engines containing the alleged defeat devices from model year 2014 through 2016 vehicles emit up to nine times the EPA’s standard of nitrogen oxide. There was also a knock-on effect to VW subsidiary marques with SEAT sales down 32% and Skoda down 3%, but Audi showed a modest 2% improvement. Company officials in the United States said the suspension would last at least until it completes its review of the EPA’s test results, and they stressed that the tactic doesn’t necessarily mean it believes that even more cars are likely to have the illegal software.
Wednesday sale stoppage went far beyond these models to include any 2013-2016 model-year Volkswagen and Audi vehicles with 3.0-liter diesel engines alongside the Porsche SUVs.
Volkswagen said 11 million of its vehicles globally had software that allowed them to cheat on emissions tests for a different pollutant, nitrogen oxide.
Volkswagen’s emissions-rigging scandal has widened after the company said it had understated carbon dioxide emissions for 800,000 of its cars.
Volkswagen has revealed that the fixing of emissions might not only be limited to diesel engine cars…admitting that petrol engine cars are affected as well. Volkswagen lost 1.67 billion euros ($1.83 billion) in the third quarter, due largely to recall costs, and it warned that 2015 operating profit would fall significantly. In the US, owners could join one of over 200 class-action lawsuits alleging the cars have lost value.
It is yet to say if it will pay compensation to owners. However it reiterated that they need have no concerns over their cars’ safety.
The Volkswagen faces heavy recall and penalty costs worldwide in the biggest crises of the auto manufacturing giants history.
