The newspaper did not provide details of what the automaker proposes to do with an employee who comes forward with information about the emissions rigging after the deadline, which will reportedly be at the end of this month. On November 4 it also recalled almost 92,000 recent models, saying they had been equipped with faulty camshaft lobes that can break, reducing braking effectiveness as well as engine power, which could increase the danger of a crash.

New reports are claiming that Volkswagen may be facing yet another environment compliance scandal, this time affecting an additional 800,000 vehicles.

Slagle, who bought his vehicle in 2011, said he was surprised there was still no plans for how to fix the cars: “Even though they’re clearly culpable, somehow they’re in the driver’s seat”.

BERLINPorsche SE (PSHG_p.DE), Volkswagen’s (VOWG_p.DE) majority shareholder, said nine-month net profit plunged by more than half on costs of the diesel emissions scandal.

Volkswagen on Monday started to notify owners.

The scandal expanded last week, when the EPA accused VW of cheating with different software on larger six-cylinder diesels in about 10,000 vehicles.

Other angry VW owners who wrote to CNNMoney used terms like “slap in the face” and “scandalous” to describe the apologetic payout, which will come in the form of a gift card that can be used anywhere. “In the meantime we are providing this goodwill package as a first step towards regaining our customers’ trust”. As part of a compensation, customers will receive a $500 prepaid Visa loyalty card + $500 Volkswagen Dealership Card which can be used to purchase consumables / parts or even a new auto at existing VW dealerships. A few 11 million vehicles worldwide are fitted with the software.

In a statement, the two said the program is “a fig leaf attempting to hide the true depths of Volkswagen’s deception”.

In the letter, Diess said the offer was being made to staff in the interests of “full and swift clarification” of the scandal, which has since grown to place question marks over other diesel and petrol engines. The package is only available to those that now own an affected vehicle. VW said on Monday that customers “don’t have to sign anything” and will not be required to relinquish any legal rights.
